Weekend Virtual Retreats

Program Overview

Weekend Virtual Retreats feature two days of one-on-one video therapy with me, followed by three weekly 90-minute Intensive Sessions to reinforce our work together.  Each day consists of three sessions – two 3-hour sessions during the day, and one 90-minute evening session.  Adults residing in the State of Washington who seek relief from the effects of trauma, depression, substance abuse, gambling addiction, or codependence are welcome to apply for admission into the program.

Weekend Virtual Retreats are intended to create a strong foundation for healing, providing stability, insight, and relief, a path out of pain.  While each person’s experience is unique and specific outcomes cannot be guaranteed, people are often surprised at how much better they feel after just two days.

These specialized retreats provide some key aspects and benefits of inpatient treatment without the same time & financial commitment. In my experience, virtual sessions can be as effective as in-person therapy with the added benefit of location independence.

My Approach

I approach therapy as a collaborative art: we work together to balance what I believe is possible for you and what you are ready to address.  I see my role as that of compassionate facilitator, helping you to connect with your innate wisdom and your body’s natural healing mechanisms. To this end, I use Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and related techniques. EMDR is the gold standard for trauma treatment and it has been adapted for use with addictive behaviors from substance abuse to codependence, and many more.  EMDR-based intensive therapy has been shown to be a method that can elicit permanent healing over the course of months, not years.

Sample Schedule


9am-12pm – Initial Evaluation & Treatment Planning

The Initial Evaluation is a deep dive into your strengths and the challenges you face.  From a holistic perspective we will explore biological, psychological, and social aspects of your life, creating a roadmap for our work together.

  • Identification of treatment goals to be treated with trauma-focused and/or addiction-focused EMDR for later desensitization and reprocessing
  • Exploration of current trauma response or depressive symptoms and the memories to which they are linked using target sequence planning or a trauma timeline
  • Identification of addiction urges, triggers, and corresponding feeling-states, if applicable
  • Guided exercises intended to provide immediate symptom relief including Robert Miller’s Pain/Terror Release and Image Deconstruction Protocols (2017), Phil Manfield’s Flash Technique (2017), and related interventions.

12pm-2pm – Lunch and Exercise Break

2pm-5pm – Foundational Skill Building

Foundational Skill Building serves two purposes: (1) It provides tools that can be used between sessions to soothe and strengthen oneself.  (2) It lays the groundwork for future healing as the skills are accessible during later trauma- and addiction-processing.  These skills may be considered part of the Preparation Phase (Phase 2) of EMDR’s 8-Phase protocol, though we will draw upon them throughout treatment.

  • Parts work.  Deepen confidence in oneself through connecting with healthy ego states, reinforced through the use of bilateral stimulation.  (As elaborated by Robin Shapiro)
  • Resourcing work.  Creation of inner resources including Peaceful Place, Container, Nurturing Figures, Protector Figures, and Wise Figures.  (As elaborated by Brad Galvin, Roy Kiessling, and Laurel Parnell)

5pm-6:30pm – Dinner Break

6:30pm-8pm – Day Review and Consolidation

  • More deeply explore possible targets for trauma and addiction processing, setting up tomorrow’s work.  This may include target sequence planning or creation of a trauma timeline for traumatic memories and the Feeling-State Addiction Protocol or a similar intervention for addictive patterns.
  • Review of the day’s progress and reinforcement of resources through continued practice.


9am-12pm – Trauma and Addiction Processing

Throughout today, we will work through traumatic memories and addictive patterns, if applicable, using EMDR, Image Transformation Therapy, and addiction-specific interventions such as the Feeling-State Addiction Protocol and Feeling-State Image Protocol.  We will begin:

  • Targeting and processing traumatic memories.
  • Targeting and processing addictions, if applicable.

12pm-2pm – Lunch and Exercise Break

Lunch break to rest, take mild exercise, and integrate healing.  With EMDR, processing continues post-session so this free time is intended to facilitate your brain’s processing of the work completed thus far.

2pm-5pm – Continued Trauma and Addiction Processing

Our morning session will provide additional information based on your response to the work as to our next steps, which may include:

  • Targeting additional memories within the target sequence plan.  That is, memories that are linked to a specific negative belief about oneself such as “I’m unworthy.”  These may be targeted using EMDR or EMDR- related (body-centered) interventions.
  • Targeting additional feeling-states linked with a specific addiction.  For example, if we have already processed your “carefree” feeling when gambling, we might next address your “in control” feeling when gambling.  As we de-link these feelings from the gambling, the desire to gamble decreases.  After having processed these feeling-states, we will then work through the strong need for these feelings and the traumas underlying these needs.

6:30pm-8pm – Weekend Review and Consolidation

  • Review of today’s progress, including targeted traumas and feeling-states, if applicable.
  • Emotional stabilization using resources.
  • Treatment planning for next steps based on weekend’s progress, to include:
    • Set up the 3 additional 90-minute virtual sessions at mutually agreeable times, typically once every 1-2 weeks but more frequent may be possible
    • Continue individual counseling with Brad Galvin or another specialist to target remaining issues, if desired
